A 26-year-old teacher, Ramani, was murdered on Wednesday morning on the premises of Mallipattanam Government School in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district. The attack was allegedly carried out by Madhan, 30, after she declined his marriage proposal.
According to the police, Madhan attacked Ramani with a sharp weapon, inflicting severe cuts to her neck. She was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries on the way. Authorities have since arrested Madhan, and investigations are ongoing. “It was a personal motive,” a senior police officer stated, confirming the relationship between the victim and the accused.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the families of Ramani and Madhan had recently met to discuss their marriage. However, Ramani had refused the proposal, which reportedly left Madhan distressed. This morning, he entered the school premises and carried out the brutal attack.
The tragic incident has left the school community in shock. Tamil Nadu’s School Education Minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamizhi, strongly condemned the attack and ordered immediate counseling for the students who witnessed the horrific event. He also assured strict legal action against the accused.
"We strongly condemn the attack on Ramani, a dedicated teacher. Violence of any kind against educators is intolerable. Strict legal action will be pursued to ensure justice," the minister said in a statement, offering condolences to Ramani's family and students.
The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of educators and raised questions about the security of school premises. Local authorities have been urged to strengthen measures to ensure such tragedies are not repeated.
